Arachniinferi


These big spectral arachnids are a type of sentinel in hell. Dark and incorporeal like a shadow, they make intangible and transparent webs which shine when they bind the souls which they feed upon. Their function is to prevent that souls escape from their respective hellish realms, guarding passages and portals that can only be crossed by devils and constructs. These creatures can be found in Ghara preying on ghosts, sucking ponds of fel and ambushing travellers in desolated trails. Carnificius' priests are trained to fight them, for they are a threat towards the souls and ghosts which the priests need to appease in the necropolises they manage. Neftul and Technogestalt also have troubles with arachiinferi nests.

Challenge 1

  • Ethereal Sight. The arachniinferi can see 60 feet into the Ethereal Plane when it is on the Material Plane, and vice versa.
  • Incorporeal Movement. The arachniinferi can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. It takes 5 (1d10) force damage if it ends its turn inside an object.
  • Magic Fangs. It's bite attack is magical.
  • Spider Climb. The arachniinferi can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.
  • Web Sense. While in contact with a spectral web, it knows the exact location of any other creature in contact with the same web.

ACTIONS

  1. Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) fire damage. If the target is a creature or a flammable object, it ignites. Until a creature takes an action to douse the fire, the target takes 4 (1d8) fire damage at the start of each of its turns.
  2. Etherealness. The arachniinferi enters the Ethereal Plane from the Material Plane, or vice versa. It is visible on the Material Plane while it is in the Border Ethereal, and vice versa, yet it can't affect or be affected by anything on the other plane.
  3. Spectral Web (Recharge 5-6). Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 30/60 ft., one creature. Hit: The target is restrained by webbing. As an action, the restrained target can make a DC 12 Will check, bursting the webbing on a success. The webbing can also be attacked and destroyed (AC 10; hp 10; resistance to acid, fire, lightning, thunder; piercing, and slashing from nonmagical attacks; immunity to bludgeoning, poison, and psychic damage).
